ADDP Annual Conference & EXPO Thursday, March 26, 2009 DCU Center ~ Worcester Keynote speaker Max Cleland former U.S. Senator, War Hero, Triple Amputee, Vietnam War Veteran, and former Veteran's Affairs Administrator Senator Cleland's life of achievement as a person living with a disability, plus his insight into the concerns of soldiers returning with major disabilities, including traumatic brain injuries will make him a captivating speaker for the 2009 ADDP ANNUAL CONFERENCE AND EXPO. Max Cleland background includes:
Former U.S. Senator Max Cleland (D-GA) has a long and distinguished career in public service at the state and national levels in both the executive and legislative branches of government. Most recently he has served as a Distinguished Adjunct Professor to American University's (AU) Washington Semester Program, and as a Fellow in AU's Center for Congressional & Presidential Studies. Senator Cleland successfully ran for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by retiring Senator Sam Nunn in 1995. He served on four Senate Committees: Armed Services; Commerce, Science and Transportation; Governmental Affairs; and Small Business. Previously, Senator Cleland had the distinction of serving as the youngest Secretary of State in Georgia's history, and the youngest member of the Georgia State Senate. Leadership in Action: From the battlefield to the U.S. Senate, Max Cleland has been an eyewitness to leadership in action, whether it's shepherding young men through a war such as Vietnam or shepherding problem-solving legislation through congressional committees. Cleland shares insights gained from having spent decades on the national political stage serving numerous presidential administrations, providing audiences with tactics on how great leaders achieve results. Overcoming Any Obstacles: In an instant, Senator Cleland's life changed. Felled by a grenade in Vietnam that cost him his legs and his right arm, Senator Cleland never gave up. He overcame difficulties to become one of the most high profile symbols of the Vietnam War, later becoming head of the Veterans Administration under President Carter and then a U.S. Senator. Plan on attending the Annual Conference to hear this extraordinary speaker.
