Grant Writing Training Part II: Identifying & Approaching Grantmakers

Nonprofit organizations continually seek ways to secure needed grant funds to continue viable programs and implement new projects. But where do you begin the search for potential grant makers? It can be a labor-intensive process; there are so many resources to consider. This workshop provides a systematic process to identify and locate appropriate grant making sources including foundations, corporate giving programs, and government agencies. Learn what tools to use to match the proper funding institution to the needs of your nonprofit organization.

Purpose/Background

This is the second part of the ADDP grant-writing training series. This training is designed to provide background about and instructions for applying to foundations and funders, especially for I/DD providers. It will provide instruction on selection of funders that are likely to support I/DD projects and programs and provide an introduction to funding databases that are useful for accomplishing this goal.

Intended Audience

This workshop is designed for entry-level and mid-level grant seekers, whether they are involved in management, development or marketing at I/DD provider agencies.

Learning Objectives

This is a half-day workshop is for the novice to intermediate grant seeker. Topics include:

  • Identifying different types of resources to use when investigating potential funders including the Web
  • Providing a method of determining potential matches
  • Investigating and creating a list of potential funders
  • Building a relationship with a funding institution

Speaker

Diane Gedeon-Martin, President of The Write Source

For over 27 years, Diane Gedeon-Martin, has focused on grants, grant seeking, and fund development for nonprofit organizations. She launched The Write Source in 1993 that today, her company boasts a roster of over 260 nonprofit clients in 25 states and Washington, DC.

Based in Connecticut, Diane is a nationally recognized speaker and trainer. In 2015, she retired after 14 years as an adjunct faculty member of The Fund Raising School at the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy at Indiana University where she taught and co-developed the curriculum for their Grant Proposals course. She frequently presents at regional, national, and international conferences across the country including those hosted by the Grant Professionals Association, Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP), statewide resource centers, and a number venues hosted by nonprofit organizations. In 2010, she became a certified Master Trainer through the AFP Faculty Training Academy.
